Johnny Herbert: Verstappen's Diehard Fans 'the Worst' for Abuse TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Johnny Herbert faced abuse from Max Verstappen fans

Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has slammed the most passionate section of Max Verstappen's fanbase, describing them as "the worst" when it comes to online abuse. The three-time grand prix winner, who also served as an FIA steward, revealed he received horrific messages after criticising the Dutchman.

Speaking to a betting website, Herbert recalled the backlash he faced following the 2024 Mexico City Grand Prix. He had questioned Max Verstappen's driving, calling it "over the top" and suggesting the Dutchman had developed a "horrible mindset" of forcing rivals off track.

The comments triggered a fierce response from Verstappen's father, Jos, who accused the stewards of bias. Herbert was later removed from his steward role by the FIA ahead of the 2025 season, a decision many linked to the public feud.

In the interview, Herbert didn't hold back: "They were the worst!" He explained that the abuse came not only from Dutch fans but from across the globe, with messages like "Death to Herbert." He also defended his objectivity, noting that while he supports British drivers like Lewis Hamilton, he still respects Verstappen's talent.
