Mercedes driver George Russell was handed a rare in-practice warning following a dramatic near-miss with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc during Friday practice at Formula 1's United States Grand Prix in Austin.
Leclerc was trying to get past Russell while on a push lap during second practice and had to take to the run-off area at Turn 18 as the pair came incredibly close to making direct contact on the track.
Race control quickly issued Russell with a black-and-white flag for forcing another driver off the track. Minutes later, race control passed the incident on to the stewards for a formal investigation to determine if any further sporting regulations were breached.

However, the stewards swiftly decided that no further action was necessary following their review. Sky Sports F1 pundit and former grand prix driver Anthony Davidson weighed in on the incident, noting that a difference in power output between the two cars played a significant role in how the situation unfolded.
This tension unfolds as Russell heads into the weekend's crucial race trailing Mercedes team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 102 points in the championship standings. Antonelli has a mathematical chance to secure his maiden F1 world championship in Austin if he wins the race and Russell finishes ninth or lower.
