Aston Martin team principal Adrian Newey has offered a candid assessment of Honda's power unit development during the official FIA press conference in Austin. Amid a challenging Formula 1 campaign, the Japanese manufacturer's engine performance has not yet enabled the Silverstone-based squad to fight regularly for points.
The introduced ADUO updates covering both the internal combustion engine and turbo steps have fallen short of initial expectations. Nevertheless, the primary development focus has steadily shifted toward securing a much larger competitive step for the upcoming regulatory era.
When asked whether performance had progressed as anticipated, Newey provided a measured response, acknowledging that the manufacturer itself harbours some frustration over the limited gains achieved throughout the current season.

'I think it's fair to say that Honda have probably been a little bit disappointed with how much progress they have managed to make this year,' Newey stated. 'Pero as always, or as is so often the case in that situation, it only strengthens resolve to go forward in the future. The future is obviously the important bit for both companies.'
Newey noted that a clearer picture of the chassis and engine deficit can be derived directly from GPS telemetry data. Despite ongoing difficulties, he maintains strong optimism regarding the promising projects currently underway at the Sakura development base in Japan ahead of future rule changes.
