Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has expressed confidence ahead of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after demonstrating strong pace with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team during qualifying at Albert Park Circuit.
The British driver controlled the pace throughout Saturday, first topping the timesheets in the final practice session before delivering a dominant performance in qualifying. Russell secured pole position with a lap time of 1:18.518, finishing over three tenths of a second ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli.
The result marked the eighth pole position of Russell’s Formula 1 career as he prepares to chase his sixth grand prix victory in Sunday’s race.

“It was a great day. We knew there was a lot of potential in the car, but until we get to the first Saturday of the season, you never truly know,” Russell said.
“But the car really came alive this afternoon, especially when the track temperatures cooled. We know those conditions tend to suit us.”
Russell also welcomed the presence of Antonelli alongside him on the front row, praising the Mercedes mechanics for their efforts after the Italian’s heavy crash earlier in FP3.
“I’m really happy to have Kimi here next to me as well, because the whole team has worked incredibly hard to deliver this car,” Russell added.
“They also did an amazing job in the garage today after his crash, so overall it has been a really good day.”
Despite Mercedes appearing to hold a strong advantage heading into the race, Russell emphasised that the grand prix itself could still prove unpredictable due to the characteristics of the new generation of Formula 1 cars introduced for the 2026 season.
According to the Mercedes driver, even fundamental aspects of racing have become more complex under the current regulations.
“A lot of the simple things from the past, like race starts or pit stops, are now much more challenging with these new cars,” he explained.
“I even told the team before Q3 that we just needed a clean session, because you never know what might happen tomorrow.”
Mercedes will now analyse the data overnight as the team prepares for the opening race of the 2026 Formula 1 season, with Russell believing they are currently in the best possible position heading into Sunday’s grand prix.
