Adrien Fourmaux arrives in Paraguay with one clear mission: to make amends for last year's missed opportunity. The Hyundai driver came close to a strong result on the WRC's first visit to the country, but it all slipped away in the final moments.
In 2024, Adrien Fourmaux was impressive on Paraguay's challenging gravel roads. He led the rally on Friday and remained in the fight at the front for most of the weekend. However, fortune turned its back when he fell victim to the conditions on the last stage, dropping from second to fourth.
The team's decision then came after the finish. Hyundai asked Fourmaux to retire to replace a damaged gearbox without penalty. At the same time, his teammate Ott Tanak, who was still fighting for the championship, gained valuable points.
Now, with valuable lessons from last year, Fourmaux feels more confident. "Last year we had a really strong rally in Paraguay. We were leading on Friday and fighting at the front for most of the weekend, so it's an event where we know we can be competitive," he said.
The nature of Paraguay's stages presents its own challenge. Grip can change dramatically, and on the fastest sections, drivers need full confidence in the car. "The stages are quite unique, with the grip changing a lot and some very fast sections, so you need to have confidence in the car and be able to adapt quickly," Fourmaux added.
Hyundai gained plenty of experience from last year's event. The team's performance on fast gravel has also improved recently. "We learned a lot there last year, and after our recent performances on fast gravel I'm looking forward to going back," said Fourmaux.
His target this time is unambiguous. Last year's strong performance went without the reward he wanted, so the task now is to finish the job. "The target is clear: we want to fight at the front again and this time make sure we come away with the result," he concluded.
