F2 Debuts in Madrid: Tsolov vs Camara Heats Up at Madring

Formula 2 will make history this weekend as the series holds its first-ever race at the brand-new Madring, a circuit purpose-built for this debut. Located in Madrid, the track hosts the closing half of the 2026 season and presents a unique challenge: a blend of street and permanent circuit characteristics that demands pinpoint precision.

Drivers who have sampled the layout compare it to aspects of Budapest and Jeddah. With flowing corners and blind entries, Madring is a fast track that pushes drivers to the limit. Although a few Formula 1 teams and Formula 3 have tested there, actual conditions remain largely a mystery for the F2 field.

With only a single 45-minute practice session, track time is precious. The afternoon qualifying will be the real test, where quick adaptation could determine the weekend's outcome. Nikola Tsolov currently leads the standings with 177 points, but his lead is under threat from Rafael Camara, who has 166 points after overtaking Gabriele Mini. Mini sits third with 147 points.

Camara, with five pole positions this season, has been in fine form, finishing second in the Monza Feature Race. Meanwhile, Tsolov has not returned to the podium since the Spa Feature Race before the summer break. Momentum is clearly with Camara, and with only 11 points separating them, Madrid could be a turning point in the title fight.

However, the battle is not just between the top two. Mini, who led the championship in the first half, still has a chance despite being 30 points adrift of Tsolov. The Italian has struggled to replicate his early form, but with four rounds remaining, anything can happen.

Madring will be a proving ground for these young drivers. New circuits often produce surprises, and with minimal preparation time, whoever adapts fastest stands the best chance of a strong result. Madrid is not just a debut; it is a crucial moment in the championship dynamics.
