Former IndyCar star Colton Herta has officially revealed his strong desire to return to one of motorsport's most prestigious events following a challenging campaign and mounting uncertainty surrounding his 2027 career path. The American driver previously made the high-profile switch to Formula 2 in a determined effort to secure the vital Super Licence points required for a much-anticipated promotion to Formula 1.
However, as the grueling season nears its conclusion with only two rounds remaining, the 26-year-old's debut campaign with the Hitech squad has proven significantly more difficult than anticipated. Having yet to reach the podium or secure the necessary championship standings, Herta candidly admitted that he is not interested in extending his stint in the junior single-seater category for another year.
Despite the setbacks in Europe, the Cadillac-backed competitor made it clear that his passion for American open-wheel racing remains intact, keeping the door wide open for a sensational return to the legendary Indianapolis 500 when the right opportunity arises.

"Yeah, I'll never turn down the Indy 500," Herta explained when reflecting on his enduring love for the historic oval race, as reported by Motorsport Week.
While a planned appearance was unfortunately derailed earlier this year due to calendar clashes with rescheduled F2 rounds in Miami and Montreal, Herta remains optimistic about his future prospects. Formula 2 CEO Bruno Michel also weighed in on the American's steep learning curve, noting that the stark transition between different racing cultures presented an unexpected hurdle for both team and driver.
