Adrian Newey has openly admitted that the Japanese manufacturer has been less than satisfied with the pace of their development since returning to the Formula 1 grid this season. The Silverstone-based outfit faced a steep learning curve early in the year, battling severe vibration issues and reliability setbacks that severely hampered their initial outings.
However, performance has gradually picked up following the introduction of crucial power unit upgrades. Combined with ongoing aerodynamic developments, these changes have somewhat enhanced Aston Martin's overall competitiveness on track, even though the team continues fighting to climb out of the bottom tier of the constructors' championship.
Speaking during the official FIA press conference ahead of the United States Grand Prix weekend, the veteran technical mastermind offered a measured assessment. "I think it's fair to say that Honda have probably been a little bit disappointed with how much progress they have managed to make this year," Newey stated to journalists in the paddock.

Despite the current shortcomings, he emphasized that such hurdles only serve to strengthen the collective resolve moving forward. The dedication and strong processes already implemented within the organization give him full confidence in their ability to overcome complex power unit regulations.
Comparing the current situation to past campaigns, Newey acknowledged that Honda is presently a step behind where they stood when partnering with Red Bull back in 2019. Nevertheless, he highlighted the crucial context that this marks the very first year of their latest return to the sport.
