Wilco Zeelenberg, former Grand Prix rider and MotoGP analyst for Ziggo Sport, returns to write a column for RaceSport. In his piece, he discusses the major shift in MotoGP this season, where Aprilia has become the dominant force, overtaking Ducati. Zeelenberg also shares his personal story, revealing he underwent major heart surgery during the summer break and is grateful to be back in the paddock.
Zeelenberg admits he was surprised by Aprilia's performance, which far exceeded Ducati's in the first half of the season. He was waiting for the moment when Marc Marquez would be fully fit, hoping he would immediately be competitive. However, reality proved more complex. Marquez, who dominated last year, now struggles to keep pace with the Aprilia riders.
Jorge Martin leads the championship with a 31-point margin, a remarkable achievement given his struggles adapting to the RS-GP last season. Zeelenberg highlights Martin's resilience in overcoming injuries and contract issues. Now, Martin is not alone; all Aprilia riders are performing brilliantly, with three on the podium at Silverstone and all four in the top six of the standings.

Zeelenberg points to the 'airfunnel' on the Aprilia bike as a key to their improved performance. This aerodynamic innovation allows riders to close an air duct with their forearm, generating more downforce and disrupting airflow for riders behind. This gives all four Aprilia riders a significant advantage.
Despite Aprilia's success, Zeelenberg reminds that the competition is far from over. He predicts surprises in the second half of the season, especially if Marquez finds his best form again. With points still up for grabs, the world championship remains wide open.
Amid the racing excitement, Zeelenberg also shares a personal story. The heart surgery he underwent makes him grateful to witness MotoGP action up close again. For him, being in the paddock is an invaluable gift.
