Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren, has dismissed claims that Formula 1 is alienating its newer fan base due to the complexity of the latest 2026 regulations.

The introduction of a 50-50 power split between combustion and electrical systems, alongside new overtaking tools, has triggered widespread criticism. Among the most vocal critics is four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who has questioned the direction of the sport’s technical framework.

Fans have also expressed confusion over energy deployment modes, battery management, and the perceived reduction in flat-out driving. However, Brown maintains that the racing product remains compelling, particularly from a broadcast perspective.

“We’re only three races into the season. Whenever new technology and regulations arrive, there’s always an initial overreaction. Now heading into race four, we’ve already made adjustments that should improve things,” Brown explained.

He pointed to the hybrid era’s early criticism as a comparable situation, noting that it ultimately evolved into one of the most competitive periods in Formula 1 history.

Brown also offered a contrasting view on the source of dissatisfaction, suggesting that long-time followers of the sport are more likely to be critical than newer audiences.

“It’s probably more the fan who has been around longer. It may not be entirely fair to generalise, but the reaction seems to come more from that group,” he stated.

He further highlighted the difference between a driver’s experience and the spectator’s perspective. While drivers have voiced concerns about how the cars behave, Brown argued that the on-track action appears more dynamic and engaging on television.

The evolving fan base, significantly expanded by the success of Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’, has introduced a younger and more diverse audience to the sport, which Brown believes is responding positively to the current racing format.

Despite ongoing criticism, Brown emphasised that Formula 1 is actively refining its regulations to strike a balance between technical integrity and entertainment value.

Looking ahead, the challenge for Formula 1 will be maintaining this balance, ensuring that the sport continues to appeal to a broad audience while addressing the concerns raised by drivers and long-standing fans in the new regulatory era.
