Will Brown has revealed that he personally pushed for the public disclosure of his restrictor issue ahead of the Ipswich race weekend, a decision he believes was pivotal in turning his fortunes around after a prolonged dip in form.
As widely reported, Will Brown had been running an incorrect 49mm air restrictor on his Ford during a pre-season promotional event, and a miscommunication meant it was never swapped for the correct 50mm unit. The discovery came during Triple Eight's deep dive into Brown's near-year-long performance slump.
The reigning Supercars champions took several steps to address the issue, including switching Brown from his usual chassis 'Destiny Montana' to 'Ella' after the Perth round. The move paid off immediately, as Brown won the second race at Ipswich, ending a win drought that stretched back more than a year.
Interestingly, there were differing opinions within Triple Eight about whether to go public with the news before Ipswich, with some preferring a quieter approach to reduce external pressure on car #888. Brown, however, insisted on transparency, as he explained on his Lucky Dogs podcast.
“Talking about the restrictor in all the lead-up to it made the weekend so special,” Brown said. “It was amazing that nearly everyone in other teams was supporting you. People who didn't even like Red Bull or didn't like me, I feel like they wanted me to win. I personally wasn't going to let it stay hidden, because as a driver, I felt it should be in the media why we'd been having such a tough time.”
Brown acknowledged the added pressure that came with the announcement but embraced it. “I'm not at an advantage, but all the comments were like 'he better get pole, he better win'. I'm like, 'well, I'm just back to even',” he added.
The successful weekend, which included a third place in Race 1, a win in Race 2, and pole for Race 3, reinforced Brown's belief that with equal equipment, he can compete at the front. He currently sits seventh in the drivers' championship, with two rounds remaining before the Finals Series begins at the Gold Coast 500.
