Brazilian youngster Rafael Camara is set to make his Formula 1 debut in 2027 with the Haas F1 team. The current Formula 2 championship leader secured the coveted race seat after coming out on top during a rigorous shootout assessment in previous F1 machinery at Portugal's Portimao circuit back in August.
Speaking about the selection process, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu revealed that the decision was heavily influenced by the driver's outstanding raw speed and exceptional adaptability during the Testing of Previous Cars session.
Komatsu emphasized that natural feeling and speed cannot be taught, making them the ultimate deciding factors over other candidates in the evaluation process. Despite fluctuating track conditions and tyre vibration issues at Portimao, the young charger handled every obstacle with a remarkably calm and professional demeanor.

"He was the quickest. That was a very simple answer. Definitely, yeah. He was impressive," Komatsu told media including Crash.net. "I always said we were going to choose a driver by performance, and then through those evaluations, it was Rafa just showed incredible speed and feel. So that was the fully overriding factor above everything else."
The team boss further noted that while certain aspects of racecraft can still be refined through collaboration, the innate sensitivity to the car's behavior displayed during the test made him the clear choice for the American outfit.
Looking ahead to the 2027 season, Camara is expected to partner fellow Ferrari driver academy alumnus in the Haas lineup, setting the stage for an exciting new chapter for the racing outfit.
