Former Formula 1 chief strategist and Sky Sports pundit Bernie Collins has delivered high praise regarding the remarkable intelligence and racecraft displayed by Max Verstappen. This assessment highlights how the reigning champion managed to dominate the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit despite battling a severe one-way radio failure.
The challenging situation unfolded when the star driver for Red Bull Racing lost his ability to transmit voice messages back to the pit wall. While his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, could still broadcast instructions into the cockpit, Verstappen was completely cut off from replying verbally during the high-speed street race.
To bypass the technical hurdle, Lambiase quickly adapted by shifting to binary communication. He restricted all pit wall inputs to strict yes-or-no questions, instructing the Dutch driver to respond simply by toggling his radio button on or off while navigating the demanding layout.

Appearing on the Sky Sports F1 Show, Collins argued that successfully navigating the race under such restrictions demonstrated the extraordinary mental sharpness of the four-time world champion. Without constant telemetry feedback and real-time coaching from engineers, the driver had to rely entirely on his own analytical skills.
"These things happen in races where radio comms go down and it's very difficult from the pitwall to figure out if Max can hear you," Collins stated, reflecting on the tactical adjustments required on the pit wall, as reported by Motorsport.com.
Collins further emphasized that handling tyre degradation, evaluating optimal strategies, and managing gap margins to competitors like Charles Leclerc entirely on his own accord proved the elite caliber of the Milton Keynes squad's leading man.
