Leclerc Fastest in Bahrain FP2, Mercedes Under Radar

Charles Leclerc wasted no time asserting his dominance in the second practice session of the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver clocked a 1:37.528, securing the top spot as Friday's running came to a close. Meanwhile, Mercedes opted for a different approach: they seemed to play it safe, keeping their true pace hidden.

The Bahrain International Circuit, hosting the season opener, presents its own challenges. With 15 corners and a 5.5-kilometer layout, the track is notoriously tough on rear tires. Leclerc, familiar with the circuit's demands, squeezed every ounce of performance to steal the advantage. His lap time sent a clear signal that Ferrari is ready to fight at the front.

However, FP2 wasn't smooth for everyone. Isack Hadjar showed his frustration when he and Leclerc nearly collided in the pit lane. The minor incident highlighted how intense even practice sessions can be. Hadjar, fighting for his grid position, was visibly annoyed by Leclerc's exit from the pits right in front of him.

On the other side, Gabriel Bortoleto faced a serious issue. His car stopped at the side of the track, and he jumped out immediately, concerned about the gearbox. The incident dealt a blow to his team, which hoped to gather crucial data in this session. Bortoleto was seen in deep discussion with engineers, trying to diagnose the problem.

Max Verstappen, usually the benchmark, complained about his seating position in the cockpit. "It's just a lottery of how I sit in the car. I don't know why," he radioed. The complaint could indicate that Red Bull is still searching for the ideal setup for their driver's comfort. Nevertheless, Verstappen showed no signs of significant pace loss.

Mercedes, choosing to stay low-key, might be hiding their true potential. With stable technical regulations, the Brackley-based team often uses practice to test new components without drawing attention. If so, the battle in qualifying could be fiercer than it appears.

With these FP2 results, Leclerc and Ferrari sent a message that they are not just making up the numbers. But Mercedes, lurking under the radar, could be a hidden threat. The abrasive Bahrain circuit will test tire durability and team strategies. Qualifying will be the true test of who is really ready.
