Ducati is not officially for sale, but parent company Volkswagen is indeed evaluating the future of the Italian motorcycle manufacturer within the group. That's according to Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali, who confirmed that the brand's position is under review. This is no longer mere speculation, especially as reports of a multi-billion euro bid have surfaced.
In recent weeks, rumors about Ducati's future intensified after Italian investment firm PatrItalia expressed interest in a full takeover. Audi, which has owned Ducati since 2012, had previously stated clearly that Ducati was not for sale. Now, Domenicali's comments have opened a new, more complex chapter.
Strategic Review Amid PatrItalia's Interest
Domenicali acknowledged that the shareholder has a plan to reassess its holdings, with Ducati being one of those under evaluation. No final decision has been made yet. This review comes amid reports that PatrItalia has submitted a proposal to acquire 100% of Ducati Motor Holding's shares for a staggering sum.
The move was made despite Audi's earlier denial of any intention to sell. Now, with the CEO's own admission, the corporate direction is becoming clearer. Is this the start of serious negotiations or just a strategic maneuver? Nothing is certain, as Volkswagen has not yet initiated a formal sale process.
Ducati Is Healthy, So Why Sell?
Interestingly, Domenicali stressed that this evaluation has nothing to do with financial troubles. Ducati is a "very healthy and solid" company with no complicated future ahead. If a sale were to happen, it wouldn't be to offload a struggling business, but rather to part with one of the group's most prestigious brands.
This decision would undoubtedly have a major impact on motorcycle racing, especially in MotoGP. Ducati has been a dominant force with its factory and satellite teams. A change in ownership could bring fresh energy or uncertainty for riders and fans alike.
For now, Ducati remains fully under Audi AG's control. There's no active auction or search for buyers. However, the racing world and automotive industry will be watching closely for the next move from the German giant.
