Verstappen Keeps Singapore Sprint Pole Despite Yellow Flag Overtaking Breach

Formula 1 championship leader Max Verstappen has successfully kept his crucial pole position for the sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix, despite falling under intense investigation for breaching yellow flag regulations after overtaking rival Lewis Hamilton during a tense qualifying session.

The controversial incident occurred between Turns 7 and 8 during the sprint qualifying format when single waved yellow flags were rapidly deployed across the Marina Bay street circuit. The warning flags came out after Sergio Perez suffered front wing damage on his Cadillac machine, which subsequently shed dangerous debris onto the racing line.

The unusual circumstances immediately triggered a summons from the FIA race stewards, requiring both Verstappen and Hamilton to report to the race control office after the session concluded to explain the high-speed overtaking maneuver in detail.

According to the official stewards' report, Verstappen "explained that he was on throttle exiting Turn 7 and then saw the yellow flag and lifted. This was confirmed by telemetry." The data verified that within approximately 40 metres of entering the designated yellow flag sector, the Red Bull driver had lifted fully off-throttle.

Meanwhile, Hamilton was actively braking and had reduced his speed to less than 60km/h at the exact point where Verstappen drew alongside and completed the pass. Because Verstappen was on a flying push lap accelerating out of Turn 7 while Hamilton had dramatically slowed down, the speed differential at the point of overlap was remarkably significant despite Verstappen also initiating braking procedures.

The stewards formally noted they were entirely satisfied that Hamilton had reacted appropriately to the yellow flag warning by lifting off the throttle and successfully reducing his velocity. Furthermore, analysis showed that the speed of Verstappen at the exact overtake point was roughly 70km/h slower than his speed recorded on another push lap during the exact same session.

Verstappen further defended his driving by explaining that to have avoided the overtake entirely would have required him to apply extremely heavy braking, a move he considered would have potentially created an unsafe situation for trailing cars.

Ultimately, the stewards determined that while Verstappen technically had breached the yellow flag regulation by overtaking Hamilton under the waved flags, they were satisfied that the pass was merely an unfortunate consequence of the significant closing speed differential. Consequently, no sporting penalty was applied, allowing Verstappen to retain his hard-earned sprint race pole position.
