After being sidelined since the end of last season, Yuki Tsunoda makes his Formula 1 comeback this weekend at Zandvoort. The opportunity arose after Isack Hadjar suffered a wrist injury, opening a seat at Racing Bulls. Despite the challenges—a sprint weekend and a long layoff—Tsunoda has a dual mission: to enjoy being back and to boost his career prospects.

Last season was a nightmare for Tsunoda at Red Bull Racing. Failing to deliver consistently alongside Max Verstappen, he lost his race seat to Hadjar and settled for a reserve role. His chances of a full-time return in 2027 look slim, prompting him to explore other options, including IndyCar, with talks held at Meyer Shank Racing.

However, this unexpected F1 call-up gives Tsunoda a platform to prove himself. "It's always good to perform, which I'm aiming for," he told media at Zandvoort. "I've got to give my 100% performance. Having this opportunity and not having it is a lot different. Chatting with teams is about selling myself with talking, but you always want to prove by driving."

Tsunoda insists his priority remains F1, but he is open to other series if needed. "My mentality is always in F1, my main goal is to drive in F1 and have success. But I don't want to stay in the garage for two years. If there's no seat for next year, I have to look at other series," he said. He acknowledged the difficulty of securing an F1 seat and expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

The impact of Tsunoda's return is immediate. For Racing Bulls, his experience is valuable amid sprint pressure. For Tsunoda, this is a chance to show he still belongs, potentially widening his options for 2027—whether in F1 or as a stronger candidate for IndyCar.
