Alonso Hasn't Thought About Future, Fully Focused on Dutch GP

The summer break is usually the perfect time for some clear thinking. But not for Fernando Alonso. The Aston Martin driver arrived at Zandvoort without an answer about his Formula 1 future.

After the Hungarian GP, the Spaniard hinted he would consider extending his career. But speaking to the media at the Dutch GP, Alonso insisted his mind is fully on the race weekend ahead, not on contracts or long-term scenarios.

“I feel fast, I feel motivated, but honestly I haven’t thought about my future until I got here,” he said. “My mind is completely focused on this weekend, not the future. I understand the attention might be on the future, but it’s not my main priority right now.”

Interestingly, Alonso stressed that his final decision will not be determined by Aston Martin’s performance or the Honda engines. Personal factors are what matter most. “The decision will depend on my head,” said the 45-year-old. “I’ve said it many times: the regulations are what they are. These aren’t the best or most fun cars to drive, but this is still my life, and Formula 1 will always be my life. My heart is here.”

Alonso even hinted that his future might not be in the cockpit. “I will stay with this team, in one role or another, in the long term. So it’s not about me or who will drive next year, or if I drive next year or in three years. The decision is up to Lawrence Stroll and Adrian Newey, and if the team needs me as a driver, I will consider it and be happy. If I can be more useful in another role, I will consider it and be happy too. But I need to drive something, that’s for sure,” he insisted.

The two-time champion also admitted he still feels the racing fire. “I need to race, I need to feel the adrenaline. I have other challenges in mind, as I’ve said many times: winning Dakar one day, trying the Indy 500 again, or whatever else awaits me. Winning a third World Championship in Formula 1 would obviously be the biggest dream. Is it possible? I don’t know how long it will take to achieve that with this team. If it takes a long time, maybe I won’t be behind the wheel anymore, but it’s all in my head.”

As for when an announcement might come, Alonso remains vague. “I don’t have an exact date. I just got back from holiday, so we’ll see in the next days, weeks, or months. Lawrence is coming this weekend, so I’ll have lunch or coffee with him. I also need to go to the factory soon for the simulator,” he concluded.
