Toto Wolff says he would rather have a competitive Mercedes engine with some reliability concerns than a package that is fundamentally short of performance.
Mercedes has started the season with the strongest overall package and has won seven of the opening nine grands prix. However, that advantage has occasionally been offset by reliability problems that caused George Russell to retire in Canada and Kimi Antonelli to fail to finish in Barcelona.
Wolff believes Mercedes has the option of reducing how aggressively it operates the engine while the technical issues are addressed. In his view, that position is preferable to beginning the season with a significant performance deficit.

“I would rather dial back something that is really good and fix the reliability gremlins than run behind on performance,” Wolff said.
“So far, we have won seven races out of nine. I would rather have this than be slow and unreliable,” he added.
Mercedes suffered its second defeat of the season at the previous round in Barcelona, where Charles Leclerc delivered victory for Ferrari. Antonelli also lost positions to Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton following a poor start.
Wolff suggested that the getaway was more likely caused by driver error, although he stressed that his assessment was based on limited information. Mercedes must now balance its performance advantage with improved reliability as the championship continues.
