Red Bull Racing has taken a subtle swipe at George Russell on social media following the Mercedes driver's emotional reaction to his retirement from the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix.
Russell endured one of the most frustrating moments of his season when a power unit failure struck his Mercedes W17 on lap 30 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The British driver had been leading the race after an intense battle with team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who ultimately went on to secure victory.
The retirement carried significant championship consequences. While Russell lost a likely race win and valuable points, Antonelli capitalised by claiming his fourth consecutive victory and extending his lead in the drivers' standings to 43 points.

Immediately after the failure, Russell sat motionless in the cockpit before visibly venting his frustration by throwing the headrest from his car as marshals prepared to recover the stranded Mercedes. Images of the incident quickly spread across social media platforms.
One post on X featured a photograph of Russell's stationary car accompanied by a caption highlighting the unusual reaction. The post soon attracted attention from Red Bull's social media account, which responded with a brief but pointed comment.
The team replied with the phrase, "Borderline something something," a remark that many Formula 1 followers immediately recognised as a reference to Russell's previous feud with Max Verstappen.
The origins of that rivalry can be traced back to the 2024 Qatar Grand Prix weekend, when Verstappen received a grid penalty after an incident involving Russell during qualifying. The disagreement intensified during discussions with the stewards and continued publicly over the following weeks.
At the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Russell accused Verstappen of reacting with unnecessary anger whenever situations did not go his way and described some of the behaviour as being close to violence. Those comments became one of the most talked-about storylines of the closing stages of the 2024 campaign.
As a result, Red Bull's latest social media response was widely interpreted as a direct reference to Russell's previous remarks. While clearly intended as a light-hearted joke, the comment quickly reignited discussion surrounding the long-running tension between the Mercedes and Red Bull camps.
Beyond the online exchange, Russell's primary concern remains the championship battle. However, the Montreal episode served as another reminder that Formula 1 rivalries are no longer confined to the racetrack, with social media increasingly becoming an extension of the competitive and political battles that define the sport.
