Palou Perfect in Portland, Extends IndyCar Points Lead

Alex Palou produced another masterclass in IndyCar, taking his sixth win of the season at Portland International Raceway on Sunday. The Spaniard's dominance stretched his championship lead to a massive 110 points with just five rounds remaining.

Felix Rosenqvist led the field away from pole, and remarkably the entire pack survived the notorious Turn 1 complex without incident. But the real battle was won in the pit lane.

Palou leapfrogged into the lead after the first round of stops, capitalizing on a slow service from Rosenqvist's Meyer Shank Racing crew. From there, no one could catch him. Despite a sluggish pit stop of his own later in the race, he had built enough of a cushion to cruise home by over four seconds.

Rosenqvist held on to second, continuing his impressive form since announcing his move to Arrow McLaren for next season. Will Power completed the podium in third, securing his third rostrum finish of the year with Andretti Global, though a win still eludes him.

Rinus VeeKay finished fourth as the top Chevrolet runner, ahead of Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson, giving Andretti a stellar result on the West Coast. Meanwhile, the soft tire strategy proved to be a game-changer for several teams.

Team Penske committed to three sets of softs for Scott McLaughlin and Josef Newgarden, who climbed from 13th and 14th to seventh and eighth respectively. Christian Lundgaard also impressed, rising from 25th to ninth after a wheel-to-wheel battle with Kyffin Simpson.

Not everyone had a smooth day, though. Graham Rahal ran wide at Turn 11, slid across the grass and hit the tire barrier, but continued to finish 23rd. Marcus Armstrong was the only retirement due to engine trouble, while Christian Rasmussen lost four laps after a slow pit stop.

With five races left, the title fight is far from over. Next up is a brand-new street circuit in Markham, Canada.
