Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Oscar Piastri says he has already moved on from what he described as an “embarrassing” crash at the season-opening Formula 1 race at the Albert Park Circuit. The McLaren driver is now focused on the upcoming round at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Piastri suffered a major disappointment at his home race in Melbourne after crashing on the sighting lap while heading to the grid. The incident was triggered by an unexpected spike in power from his car, abruptly ending what had been a promising weekend for the Australian driver.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m ready to get back into it.”

“Obviously, it’s certainly not going to be the favourite moment of my career.”
The Australian acknowledged the crash was embarrassing, particularly because the performance throughout practice and qualifying had been relatively strong for both him and the team.
“I think I still tried to learn as much as I could from the race. I’m still going through some of the things that happened last Sunday, in terms of what happened during the race.”
“But up until that point, through practice and qualifying, we executed the plan we had quite well.”
Despite the setback, Piastri believes there were still positives to take from the weekend and noted that his points situation early in the season is not drastically different compared to the same stage last year.
“There are definitely positives to take from last weekend. Even though it’s more embarrassing, we’re only two points worse off than I was at this point 12 months ago.”
The McLaren driver also spent the days following the race analysing what went wrong on Sunday before shifting his focus toward the next event on the calendar.
“There were a lot of things to understand from the weekend in general, especially how Sunday went so wrong.”
“But I understood the factors that went into it pretty quickly and then focused on what I need to do this weekend to be as fast as possible.”
The race in Melbourne also offered insight into the early competitive picture of the season, with Mercedes emerging as a strong contender after George Russell secured victory. Meanwhile, Piastri’s team-mate Lando Norris finished more than 50 seconds behind the race winner after a chaotic opening phase of the race.
Piastri believes one of the key technical factors influencing performance early in the season is the optimisation of the power unit, which he says can deliver much larger gains than traditional car setup adjustments.
“There’s been some head-scratching at certain points. We’ve probably not even spoken about the car that much because we’re so focused on getting the most out of the power unit.”
“One of the things we learned is that the difference you can make by optimising the power unit is much bigger than anything you can achieve with the car setup.”
With the Formula 1 calendar moving immediately to the next round, Piastri sees the upcoming race weekend as an opportunity to reset and respond quickly after the disappointment of his home grand prix.
