Former Olympic medallist John Steffensen is set to make a high-profile return to the track in the Aussie Racing Cars championship at the Gold Coast 2026. The 44-year-old, who notably claimed a silver medal in the 4x400m relay at the 2004 Athens Olympics alongside two gold medals at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, last competed at the Adelaide Grand Final. Outside of his ongoing commitments in the category, Steffensen has also made selective appearances across the V8 SuperUte Series, Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, and Carrera Cup.
Steffensen's return highlights a diverse grid featuring several notable comebacks ahead of the weekend. Series veteran Kyle Ensbey is scheduled to make his long-awaited first start in two years, while TA2 and Trans Am regular Des Collier also joins the fiercely competitive field at one of the most demanding street circuits on the calendar.
Alongside the returning veterans, a wave of fresh talent will experience their first taste of Aussie Racing Cars competition on the Gold Coast. Karting powerhouse and Porsche Sprint Challenge outfit Tyler Greenbury Racing enters the fray with standout driver Kobi Williams set to make his series debut. Williams arrives as the driver to beat in this year's Sprint Challenge, having secured five race victories while leading the championship standings into the final round at Sandown.

The battle for the outright championship crown remains intensely razor-thin as the season reaches its climax. Championship leader Anthony Di Mauro heads into the weekend holding just a precarious 16-point advantage over V8 SuperUtes regular Rossi Johnson, with both contenders serving as standout performers throughout a thrilling campaign.
On-track action for the Aussie Racing Cars field kicks off with practice and qualifying sessions on Friday, followed by four high-intensity races spread across Saturday and Sunday. All competitive sessions will be broadcast live via Fox Sports and Kayo, with Race 4 on Sunday afternoon scheduled for free-to-air coverage on 7mate as part of the major Gold Coast 500 support lineup.
