Ferrari driver Ollie Millroy has undergone two surgeries following his terrifying fiery crash on Saturday in a China GT race in Shanghai. His wife, Fern, provided a fresh update on his condition.
The incident occurred at the Shanghai International Circuit when the No.33 BMW of Neil Verhagen and the No.37 Ferrari of David Chen collided on the back straight, sending the No.37 car into Millroy's AAI Motorsports Ferrari, which burst into flames upon impact.
Millroy was rescued from the burning car by Porsche driver Loek Hartog, who acted quickly as marshals and medical crews were slow to assist. In an Instagram post on Sunday, Millroy thanked Hartog for saving his life.
On Monday, Fern revealed that Millroy remains in stable condition in the intensive care unit in Shanghai, surrounded by top doctors and surgeons. The impact was so severe it broke his HANS device. He suffered six broken ribs, a broken clavicle, a broken hand, and a punctured lung.
Following a successful four-hour surgery, plates and screws were fitted to the broken bones. A second procedure inserted a drain line to release gas and fluid leaking from his lung, relieving pain. Doctors are also monitoring his cognitive state after a severe concussion that left him unconscious for over an hour. The force of the crash even cracked his helmet visor and snapped his HANS device.
Fern expressed gratitude, saying, "Despite the injuries and the challenges we are facing now, we can't help but feel lucky he's alive, and the overwhelming feeling we all have is enormous gratitude and love towards Loek Hartog who saved Ollie's life." AAI Motorsport and 610 Racing Team have announced they will not compete further in China GT this season.
The crash has prompted an investigation by the China GT organizers. In an official statement, they noted that preliminary findings concluded national standards were met, but they will conduct a full review of the incident and its aftermath. Reports emerged that ambulance crews took 15 minutes to reach the scene while the driver was unconscious.
