ZANDVOORT – Lando Norris grabbed pole position at the Dutch GP with an aggressive lap, but underneath, McLaren still has serious homework to do. Meanwhile, Ferrari is showing more weakness in qualifying.

Norris was in fine form at the demanding Zandvoort circuit. He admitted taking more risks than usual to stand out in a tightly contested session. The result: 17 cars were within one second in Q1, and Norris came out on top. However, this qualifying victory seems to mask the fact that the MCL40 is far from perfect.

McLaren's weakness is evident in slow corners. This is where the rear tires work hardest and degradation becomes a real threat. This issue already surfaced during the Sprint, where Norris struggled to maintain tire performance. In qualifying, the grip of fresh tires can hide that deficiency, but during the race, aerodynamic load will be the deciding factor.

The upgrades introduced since Hungary have indeed improved performance in fast corners. However, Zandvoort demands more balance in slow corners, with wind often blowing hard at the rear of the circuit. This means McLaren cannot breathe a sigh of relief. Although overtaking at Zandvoort is notoriously difficult, Norris' victory is far from guaranteed.

On the other hand, Mercedes is competitive again. George Russell, who will start second, says he has found the same feeling as at the beginning of the season. He feels more natural and doesn't have to overthink his driving. This is a warning sign for his rivals.

Ferrari, arriving with high hopes, failed to challenge at the front. Their car still lacks one-lap pace. This is a chronic issue that remains unresolved. The Italian team hopes for a strategic masterclass, but their chances of attacking from a less-than-ideal starting position are slim.

The Dutch GP will be the real test. Can McLaren convert pole into victory, or will they crumble when the tires start to fade? And Ferrari needs a miracle to escape their slump.
