Zandvoort delivered a nearly perfect Saturday for George Russell. The Mercedes driver won the morning Sprint Race, trimming three points from teammate Kimi Antonelli’s lead, then locked in second place on the grid for the Dutch Grand Prix. He missed pole by just 31 milliseconds to Antonelli, but more importantly, Russell managed to put both Ferraris behind him.
Zandvoort is not a track that favors overtaking, as seen in the Sprint Race. With its narrow, twisty layout, track position is crucial. That’s why Russell’s success in outqualifying Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton—who start from the second row—could be valuable capital for Sunday’s race.
After qualifying, Russell admitted a hint of regret for not taking pole, which went to Lando Norris. “We knew rain was coming at the end of Q3, so we decided to start earlier,” he explained. “On my last lap, the first half was great, I set my best time of the weekend. I made a small mistake in the second half, the tires overheated a bit, and the lap time got slightly worse. It’s a shame because I think pole was within reach.”
Still, Russell sees the positive side. He emphasized that keeping the Ferraris behind is a victory in itself. “McLaren looked quick in the Sprint and with Norris they have a good position. Ferrari is also fast, so it’s good that they start behind us. Track position is important, but it’s a long race with many interesting strategy options. We’ll see what happens,” he concluded.
Starting from P2, Russell has a strong chance to fight for the win, especially if tire strategy and race management go smoothly. But he must be wary of threats from behind, including the Ferrari duo who will surely try to attack at the start.
