Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Nico Hulkenberg failed to start the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park, Melbourne, after his Audi suffered a technical problem on the grid moments before the race began.
The issue forced Hulkenberg’s car to be pushed off the grid and back into the garage, preventing the German driver from taking the start of the 58-lap season-opening race. The incident marked a difficult beginning for Audi in the first round of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
Hulkenberg became the second driver unable to start the race in Melbourne. Earlier, home favourite Oscar Piastri was eliminated after crashing during the reconnaissance lap to the grid prior to the formation lap.

Meanwhile, Alpine driver Franco Colapinto was placed under investigation by the stewards for a potential starting procedure infringement during the early stages of the event.
The race itself began with significant changes at the front of the field. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari made a strong launch from fourth on the grid to take the lead at the start.
Pole sitter George Russell of Mercedes dropped to second, while team-mate Kimi Antonelli slipped back to fifth in the opening laps.
By lap five, Ferrari’s second driver Lewis Hamilton was running third, while Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing had climbed to 12th after starting from the back of the grid.
With two drivers failing to start and multiple early incidents reshaping the order, the 2026 Australian Grand Prix quickly developed into a dynamic race at Albert Park as teams and drivers adapted to the evolving conditions.
