It is always a special feeling for Charles Leclerc to return to Monza, the track where he has already tasted victory twice. The Monegasque driver kicked off the Italian Grand Prix weekend in fine form, topping Free Practice 1 in the morning. By the afternoon, however, he had to settle for second place behind a resurgent George Russell and his Mercedes.
But that is where the real story begins. Monza's long straights have often played into Mercedes' hands, yet Ferrari arrived with a new weapon: the 'ADUO-2' engine, which for now appears to be giving the SF-26 the extra push it needs around this historic circuit.
Leclerc, for his part, remained measured in his assessment. He acknowledged there is work to be done before qualifying and the race. “It's always emotional to come back to Monza, a really special place for us as a team and for all our fans,” he said calmly.
“There is still work to do because our rivals look competitive. But so far the feeling with the car has been good. We know exactly where our weaknesses are, and we will focus on them. From tomorrow onward, we will give our maximum to bring home the best possible result on Sunday,” Leclerc added, signaling that he and the team have no intention of standing still.
With two previous wins here, in 2019 and 2024, Ferrari fans will be hoping Leclerc can make it three. Whether that dream becomes reality remains to be seen, but the hard work coming from the red garage will be crucial.
