Driver Murray endured a remarkably bruising start to his Gold Coast 500 weekend after his Chevrolet Camaro sustained heavy structural damage during two out of the three opening sessions on track. The day's challenges began almost immediately during a damp Practice 1 session, where a minor brush against the tyre barriers at the final turn left a visible mark on the right-front corner of his machine.
The situation escalated during the qualifying session when a costly mistake through the notorious beach chicane resulted in severe suspension damage, leaving the #36 entry stranded with its right-rear wheel hanging precariously off the chassis on the unforgiving Surfers Paradise street circuit.
Displaying resilience amidst the early setbacks, Murray lightened the mood by echoing a classic Larry Perkins quip from the 1999 Bathurst 1000. "Just a young kid having a crack. What did Larry say? Young kid, cold tyres, whatever," he remarked midway through the high-pressure qualifying run.

Reflecting on the precise moment of impact, the PremiAir driver took full responsibility for the mishap. "Unfortunately I just made a little mistake. I’ve been struggling there in the last session just then. I was trying to find a little bit of time but this place bites when it bites. Just didn’t attack the kerbs as well as I should have. I was a little bit off-line for that last kerb when I hit it. At that point, I was a passenger," he admitted candidly.
Despite the afternoon dramas and mechanical scares, the mid-season team addition managed to outpace teammate Jayden Ojeda across all three sessions, ultimately securing 20th position on the grid ahead of a fiercely competitive weekend of Australian Supercars action.
