The final practice session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos delivered high-stakes drama ahead of the Brazilian GP qualifying. Max Verstappen stamped his authority at the top of the timesheets, clocking a blistering lap of 1:11.622 on soft compound tyres to best newly crowned champion Kimi Antonelli by a mere 0.025 seconds in a tightly contested session.
Despite laying down the benchmark pace, the Dutchman faces a steep uphill battle for Sunday's main race. Verstappen is among a handful of drivers locked into heavy grid penalties after taking on a fresh power unit component allocation. Similar engine-related grid drops also await other front-running contenders, including Scuderia Ferrari spearhead Charles Leclerc.
However, pure pace woes were completely overshadowed by the sheer misery unfolding in Lewis Hamilton's garage. With roughly 25 minutes remaining on the clock, the seven-time world champion's newly installed power unit began emitting strange mechanical noises followed by thick smoke inside the cockpit. Hamilton was forced to bail out immediately, denying him any opportunity for a qualifying simulation run on soft tyres and leaving him stranded down in 12th place after completing a mere seven laps.

Amidst the chaos, McLaren demonstrated strong aerodynamic efficiency. Lando Norris steered his upgraded challenger to the third-fastest time, closely followed by teammate Oscar Piastri in sixth. Meanwhile, George Russell placed fourth for Mercedes, bracing alongside his rivals for a strategic recovery drive from penalised grid slots.
Closing out the top ten, rookie Gabriel Bortoleto carved out an encouraging tenth-fastest lap. With grid penalties shaking up the starting order significantly, the upcoming qualifying session promises an intense tactical battle under the Interlagos sun.
