Adelaide is set for a radical transformation for MotoGP and Supercars from next year. In a $96 million project, Mark Skaife, Supercars legend, reveals how the 4.13km circuit has been redesigned to cater for two very different racing series.
The South Australian Government and South Australian Motor Sport Board unveiled the plans on Sunday, with the circuit bearing little resemblance to this year's layout. The overhaul includes bigger kerbs, reprofiled corners, and realigned barriers.
According to Mark Warren, CEO of the South Australian Motor Sport Board, more than 20 iterations of the 15-turn circuit were conceived before settling on the two layouts. The design was a collaborative effort involving the state government, MotoGP, and Supercars, with input from Loris Capirossi and Mark Skaife as advisors.
For Supercars, Skaife emphasized the importance of maintaining the challenging and "unforgiving" nature of street circuits. "Peter Brock used to say great racetracks have got consequences. And this is certainly one that's got consequences. You want to actually reward risk," he said.
The main difference between the MotoGP and Supercars layouts lies in barrier alignments affecting visibility and optics. "We have tightened up a couple of corners to facilitate overtaking, similar to the staircase section," Skaife added.
Some gravel traps will also be removed between events. Specific dates for 2027 are yet to be confirmed, but MotoGP will take place first in November, followed by Supercars a couple of weeks later.
Skaife revealed that Supercars drivers were consulted on the design and still have the chance to simulate the circuit, which could open the door for further revisions before the races take place.
