Marco Bezzecchi has delivered a resolute message of support to Jorge Martin after the title contender suffered a heavy crash during the sprint race at the Australian Grand Prix. The high-speed incident at Turn 8 on lap eight resulted in a wrist fracture for the reigning world champion, dealing a massive blow to his championship aspirations at Phillip Island. Martin had entered the weekend holding a narrow two-point advantage at the summit of the standings before the dramatic accident cut his charge short.
The unfortunate retirement completely shifts the momentum of the season, handing Marc Marquez a crucial 10-point cushion at the top of the championship table. With Martin ruled out of Sunday's main event and facing a race against time to be fit for the upcoming Malaysian Grand Prix, the Ducati rider holds a significant advantage with only five rounds remaining. However, Bezzecchi insists that his Aprilia stablemate cannot be written off just yet given how unpredictable the 2024 campaign has proven to be.
Reflecting on the incident, Bezzecchi expressed his sympathy for the unfolding situation within the manufacturer camp. "It’s a real shame for Jorge, the team and everyone at Aprilia, because he was doing a great job," Bezzecchi said on Saturday. Emphasizing the volatile nature of the sport, the Italian rider added, "Obviously it’s not over yet. As we’ve seen before in this championship, anything can happen. I want to send him a big hug." Bezzecchi himself knows all about dramatic shifts in momentum, having previously held a 30-point championship lead earlier in the year.

Meanwhile, Bezzecchi's Saturday at Phillip Island required a remarkable recovery drive after a difficult qualifying session. Mixed weather conditions in the morning thwarted his flying laps, leaving him buried down in ninth place on the starting grid for the afternoon's 13-lap sprint. Despite finding himself outside the points in the opening moments, he orchestrated a stellar comeback to salvage a valuable fourth-place finish.
"As for today, I’m not happy with qualifying," he added, reflecting on his early struggles. "Unfortunately, I couldn’t put together a lap quick enough to start further up the grid. That’s disappointing, because I was quite competitive in the wet and in the dry, but in the mixed conditions in qualifying I couldn’t find the speed. I’m happy with the sprint, though. I really enjoyed it." Sitting 50 points behind the championship leader in third place, Bezzecchi may now shoulder Aprilia's sole title ambitions if Martin faces an extended spell on the sidelines.
