Luca Marini has been officially ruled out of the remainder of the Australian MotoGP weekend at Phillip Island after a severe virus triggered a high fever and debilitating muscle weakness. The Italian rider was forced to abandon his track activities early after completing just two flying laps in FP1, finishing significantly off the pace set by the leaders.

The physical struggles for the factory Honda rider became evident on Friday afternoon when he missed the crucial Practice session. Following a subsequent medical assessment on Saturday morning, race medical officials made the definitive call to declare the Italian competitor unfit to participate for the rest of the Grand Prix.

This sudden withdrawal leaves Honda HRC in an unprecedented crisis, with the squad completely devoid of factory representation on the grid. Marini's absence compounds the team's woes as his team-mate, Joan Mir, remains sidelined by ongoing health complications that have kept him out of action since the Misano round without a replacement rider in the garage.

MotoGP Chief Medical Officer Dr. Angel Charte shed light on the exact medical predicament that forced the premature end to the weekend. "For the past week, Luca Marini has been suffering from a viral condition and a high fever for three to four days," Dr. Angel Charte explained regarding the severity of the illness.

Elaborating on the physical toll, the medical chief added, "For the last 48 to 72 hours, he has been suffering from muscle weakness caused by the virus, affecting both his upper and lower body." The medical panel confirmed that no improvement was found during the final check, adding that his fitness will be re-evaluated ahead of the upcoming round in Malaysia.

The logistical nightmare for the major manufacturer is further amplified by a depleted test and replacement rider pool. Takaaki Nakagami was previously sidelined following injuries sustained during a wildcard outing at Motegi, while other test options within the stable remain unavailable due to recent surgical procedures.
