PREMA Racing has made a surprising announcement ahead of the final two rounds of the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season: Louis Sharp will not finish the campaign with the team. With the championship battle heating up, this change adds another layer of intrigue to the season's climax.
The New Zealander cited his focus on securing the best opportunities for 2027 as the reason for his departure. Sharp acknowledged that his title hopes had faded, making it logical to shift his attention to the future. He currently sits 17th in the drivers' standings with 21 points, well behind the leading contenders.
PREMA's Team Principal, Stephen Mitas, praised Sharp's contributions, highlighting his qualifying pace and positive energy. "Louis has been a pleasure to have in the team this year and a top talent. We understand and support his focus on 2027," Mitas said. The split appears amicable, with both parties expressing mutual respect.

Stepping into Sharp's seat is Alex Powell, the 2024 Italian F4 Rookie Champion. Powell is no stranger to PREMA, having previously raced for them in F4. Now, he gets the chance to showcase his skills on the Formula 3 stage for the remaining two events.
Mitas welcomed Powell back with enthusiasm. "We're delighted to welcome Alex back to PREMA. He's a driver we know well, and one who has already shown us what he can do in F4. His pace, racecraft and attitude make him a strong fit to contest the remainder of the season," he stated. Powell, for his part, expressed gratitude and determination to make the most of this opportunity.
This driver change could have significant implications for PREMA's strategy in the final rounds. With the title fight between Ugo Ugochukwu and Freddie Slater intensifying, Powell's integration will be crucial. The upcoming double-header in Madrid promises to be a dramatic conclusion to the season.
