Lewis Hamilton secured pole position for the 2026 British Grand Prix Sprint with a lap of 1:28.376 at Silverstone Circuit. The Ferrari driver defeated championship leader Kimi Antonelli by only 0.011 seconds in a contest that remained undecided until the final moments of SQ3.
The result represented the third Sprint pole of Hamilton’s Formula 1 career. His previous successes came at the inaugural Sprint event at Silverstone in 2021 and in China in 2025, extending his strong record in the shorter race format.
Antonelli briefly placed Mercedes at the top of the order with a 1:28.387. Hamilton responded moments later during the effective one-lap shootout and produced the narrow improvement required to secure the leading grid position.

Antonelli again had to settle for second place, continuing his record of qualifying in that position for every Sprint of the 2026 season. Max Verstappen finished third, with Charles Leclerc and George Russell completing the top five.
Lando Norris secured sixth after a more complicated session. His McLaren sustained rear damage following a kerb strike in SQ1, before he narrowly avoided elimination at the end of SQ2 and reached the top-10 shootout by a small margin.
Norris finished only 0.081 seconds ahead of 11th-placed Pierre Gasly. Oscar Piastri qualified seventh, while Isack Hadjar, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10 in Sprint Qualifying.
Oliver Bearman suffered a late SQ1 elimination when Alexander Albon’s final lap pushed him out of the safe positions. The Haas driver missed progression by only 0.010 seconds, while Esteban Ocon, Sergio Perez, Valtteri Bottas, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll were also eliminated.
Both Cadillac drivers again qualified ahead of the Aston Martin pairing, although neither progressed to SQ2. At the front, Hamilton demonstrated consistent pace throughout the session after also setting the fastest times in SQ1 and SQ2 before delivering the decisive SQ3 lap.
Pole gives Hamilton an important strategic advantage for the Sprint because track position carries considerable value through Silverstone’s high-speed sections. Antonelli, Verstappen and Leclerc are nevertheless close enough to apply immediate pressure, while tyre management and changing wind conditions could affect the competitive balance.
The 2026 British Grand Prix Sprint is scheduled for July 4 at 12:00 local time. Hamilton now has an opportunity to convert his qualifying speed into victory in front of his home crowd, although the 0.011-second margin demonstrates that Ferrari has little room for error.
