Hendrick Motorsports' decision to sign Connor Zilisch as Alex Bowman's replacement for 2027 has set off a chain reaction across the NASCAR Cup Series. With seats at Trackhouse Racing now under the microscope, the futures of Shane van Gisbergen and Ross Chastain—both out of contract at the end of 2026—hang in the balance. The big question: will Shane van Gisbergen stay the course or seek new pastures?
Zilisch, hailed as a future champion after an impressive 2025 Xfinity Series campaign, was Hendrick's top target. His rookie Cup season has been marred by crashes and a lack of speed—issues also plaguing his teammates. His move accelerates contract talks at other teams, including Trackhouse.
Team owner Justin Marks naturally wants to retain both of his drivers. However, financial capability and on-track performance will be decisive factors. Van Gisbergen, who has been the strongest of the trio in 2026—with road course wins and steady oval improvement—will hold strong leverage when negotiations begin.

If van Gisbergen secures a Chase berth without relying on the win-and-you're-in format, his value to other teams will rise further. Despite being 38 by 2028, he is seen as a guaranteed race winner and a genuine title contender. Several teams are reportedly monitoring his progress.
Where could van Gisbergen land if he leaves? He has ties to Spire Motorsports via their Truck Series program and previously raced for Kaulig Racing early in his Cup career. However, clear options are limited, and seat availability will be key.
Van Gisbergen has expressed a desire to stay in the Cup Series. “I can see myself here for another two, three, four more years. I don't have a timeline on it, but I really enjoy my racing. I am a long way from home and I miss being home, but it's really fun racing here,” he said in June. With Trackhouse committed to three cars, big decisions await both driver and team.
