Lewis Hamilton Loses Front-Row Start for 2026 Hungarian F1 GP

Lewis Hamilton has lost his front-row start for the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix after receiving a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri in qualifying.

Hamilton had originally secured second place after finishing just 0.012 seconds behind Lando Norris. However, the Turn 1 incident means the Ferrari driver will now start the race from fifth.

Piastri encountered Hamilton travelling slowly on the racing line while beginning his final Q3 push lap. The McLaren driver was forced to run wide to avoid Car 44 and subsequently had to abort the lap.

“Car 81, which was on a push lap, was forced to take avoiding action by running wide and being obliged to abort the lap,” the stewards stated.

Hamilton explained that he only received information about Piastri’s approach when the Australian was already in close proximity. He also believed that the drivers behind him had already completed their final laps.

“I was told literally when he was at the apex behind me, so I had no idea he was coming. Crazy, because it had been clean before that and obviously it wasn’t intentional,” Hamilton said.

Fred Vasseur admitted Ferrari gave Hamilton the warning too late and accepted responsibility on behalf of the team. The penalty promotes Charles Leclerc to the front row, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Piastri move up to third and fourth respectively for the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
