Liam Lawson has hinted that Red Bull could deploy special tactics in qualifying for this weekend's Italian Grand Prix. The signal emerged after a mixed opening day at Monza, where he finished fourth in FP1 but slipped to 12th in FP2.
The Milton Keynes-based squad again failed to challenge the top teams. Even Max Verstappen could only manage ninth in FP2, with Racing Bulls and Haas both ahead of Red Bull on Friday.
Race-Focused Data, Not Qualifying Simulations
Lawson, again replacing the injured Isack Hadjar, spent the afternoon gathering long-run data. This decision followed his struggles in the race at Zandvoort, where his race pace was far below his qualifying form.
“Yeah, I mean, it was okay,” Lawson said, assessing his day. “It’s been, I would say, a productive day. We spent most of FP2 just long running. We did a short run at the start, and it felt okay. And then we just did two long runs on the soft and the hard.”
“So, for me, it’s good learning. I think I struggled more—I struggled more—in Zandvoort in the race versus qualifying. So, I’ll try and learn what I can from it,” he added.
Slipstream Significance at Monza and Red Bull's Secret Plan
What became clear on the opening day was the importance of the tow at Monza, more significant than usual at the legendary Italian circuit. Based on that, Red Bull is set to discuss their own tactics for qualifying.
When asked if Red Bull would employ tactics with its two drivers, Lawson responded: “I mean, for sure, it’s something we’ll discuss, and we’ll come up with a plan.” This statement has fueled speculation that Red Bull might use a slipstream assistance strategy, similar to other teams on Monza's long straights.
With tight competition in the midfield and threats from customer teams, this tactical decision could be crucial in determining a vital grid position. Will Red Bull take risks for maximum results in front of the Tifosi? We'll see in qualifying.
