Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Lando Norris and George Russell followed Max Verstappen by driving on the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife during a Pirelli tyre test.
McLaren and Mercedes are conducting a two-day dry-tyre test on April 14–15, marking the first Formula 1 activity at the Nürburgring since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix. The session takes place during a five-week break in the calendar following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
Alongside their scheduled running on the modern Grand Prix circuit, both drivers took the opportunity to experience the Nordschleife—the 20.8-kilometre layout widely regarded as one of the most demanding tracks in motorsport history.

The Nordschleife holds a unique place in Formula 1 history, having hosted grands prix until Niki Lauda’s near-fatal accident in 1976 led to its removal from the championship calendar. Since then, it has remained a benchmark venue for endurance and GT racing.
Verstappen has become a regular presence at the circuit since making his GT3 debut there in 2025. He most recently won the NLS2 race before being disqualified for a technical infringement and is preparing for the Nürburgring 24 Hours in May.
Russell described the experience as particularly significant, highlighting the contrast between the Nordschleife and modern Formula 1 circuits.
“I’ve really enjoyed driving on the Grand Prix circuit this morning. I really love the Nürburgring,” Russell said.
“I also did a few laps on the Nordschleife. I really, really love that—it’s a truly traditional, old-school circuit.”
He also expressed interest in seeing Formula 1 return to Germany in the future, noting the absence of a race in the country from the current calendar.
“I would love to be back racing here one day. We don’t have a race in Germany at the moment, and with Mercedes, it would be nice to have one back,” he added.
The Nürburgring test not only serves as a key phase in tyre development for future regulations but also reconnects Formula 1 with one of its most historic venues. As activity at the circuit increases, discussions around a potential return of the German Grand Prix may regain momentum within the championship landscape.
