Kade Davey, an 18-year-old rising star, has just etched his name into Australian motorsport history. He became the first Indigenous Australian to drive a Supercar, sampling a Ford Mustang from Dick Johnson Racing at Queensland Raceway on Friday.
Davey, who has Martu and Manyjilyjarra heritage, is a competitive racer in the GR Cup. He is part of Racing Together, a non-profit creating pathways for young Indigenous Australians in motorsport and STEM. The program, founded by Garry Connelly, has strong support from key figures in the paddock.
“It was pretty unreal,” said Davey, who joined Racing Together in late 2023 as he graduated from karts to cars. “Growing up, I always watched Supercars and DJR was one of the teams I supported. Getting behind the wheel of a Supercar was crazy. I’ll be thinking about it for weeks.”
A Western Australian Karting Champion, Davey has raced Hyundai Excels and both tiers of Toyota 86 competition, currently sitting eighth in the GR Cup standings. But stepping into a Gen3 Supercar with 650 horsepower was a different beast.
“I drove a TA2 car earlier, but the most powerful thing before this was my Toyota 86 with 200hp. The jump to 650hp is huge, and that was the fun part—trying to manage all that power,” he explained.
Davey, who works at Paul Morris’ Norwell Motorplex, is clear about his career goal. “Supercars is definitely the long-term goal. I’m still in GR Cup, so there’s a long journey, but that’s the ultimate aim,” he said.
The test came thanks to DJR co-owner Ryan Story, a big supporter of Racing Together. “Kade is having a great season. Giving him this opportunity with Garry and Monique is special. It rewards the hard work of everyone involved,” Story said.
Garry Connelly expressed his pride. “Kade represents everything Racing Together stands for. Seeing him on track as the first Indigenous Australian to drive a Supercar gives us immense pride,” he added.
