Marquez Wins Aragon, But Was Acosta the Real Star?

Marc Marquez took the 37 points he targeted at the Aragon Grand Prix, but was he really the weekend's star? Well, yes, of course, but there was another rider who shone just as brightly, and the battle for top honours in our rider rankings was extremely close.

Marc Marquez was dominant on his KTM, but Pedro Acosta's performance on the same RC16 gave us pause. The following statistic was the decider: Acosta's fastest lap at Aragon was 1m47.093s, his 20th-fastest lap was 1m47.457s, while the fastest non-Acosta KTM lap was 1m47.734s. The rookie's consistency was remarkable and deserved recognition.

Acosta started sixth, finished fourth in the sprint, and second in the grand prix. He did crash in FP1 and Q2, and damaged his bike while dragging it back to its grid slot after overshooting. But his pure speed throughout the weekend made us place him at the top of our rankings, ahead of the flawless Marquez.

Meanwhile, Marco Bezzecchi from Aprilia admitted that Marquez was "for sure hiding a little bit". Despite Bezzecchi and Acosta's efforts, Marquez never looked beatable when points were on the line. Bezzecchi himself finished third in both the sprint and the grand prix, showing full control over his performance despite the left knee injury he suffered at Assen two months ago.

More good news came from Johann Zarco, who returned from injury. He impressed, finishing 15th in the grand prix after serving two long lap penalties, and said his only physical issue was Friday cramping which he linked to "six coffees on Thursday". His pace throughout the weekend showed he is fully fit, though he still needs to get back into the groove of wheel-to-wheel racing.

With these results, the battle towards the end of the season is getting more interesting. Marquez strengthened his position at the top of the standings, but Acosta proved he is a real threat. The fight this season is far from over.
