Will Power had to surrender victory at Milwaukee after receiving a drive-through penalty on lap 193. The Team Penske driver had led 19 laps before ultimately finishing 14th.
Prior to the pit stops, Will Power led McLaren's Christian Lundgaard and teammate Scott McLaughlin. Pato O'Ward was fourth for McLaren, followed by Chip Ganassi Racing's Alex Palou in fifth.
During that pit stop sequence, Lundgaard suffered a slow pit stop that took him out of contention for the win. Meanwhile, O'Ward leapfrogged McLaughlin and took the lead after Power's penalty. The race ran green to the finish on lap 250, with O'Ward holding on for victory over McLaughlin.
“Just a little bummed I couldn't get through lapped traffic there faster,” said McLaughlin. “I thought we had a little more left for the #5 (O'Ward). Congrats to Pato.”
Palou led the field to green with O'Ward alongside, who was quickly usurped by Josef Newgarden. Palou led until lap 34 before Newgarden took over. A lap later, Romain Grosjean spun out of 11th to bring out the caution.
After the restart, Palou regained the lead. Mick Schumacher rose to third, while McLaughlin climbed to fourth. O'Ward, meanwhile, dropped to 15th after a slow pit stop. In the second stint, Rinus VeeKay surprised by leading at lap 100 before Palou took over at lap 125.
Power was the big winner out of the third round of pit stops, rising from fourth to second. However, the late penalty dashed his hopes. With fresher tires, Power had taken the lead at lap 175, but the penalty forced him to settle for a points-less finish. This result tightens the championship battle.
