Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Kimi Antonelli has cautioned that Ferrari could make a significant step forward in Formula 1 2026 through the Additional Development and Update Opportunities (ADUO) system, despite Mercedes establishing early dominance.
The ADUO framework is designed to support manufacturers that are trailing the competitive benchmark, allowing targeted development to help close performance gaps. Ferrari is understood to be among the teams set to benefit from this mechanism, particularly in power unit development.
Mercedes has won the opening three rounds of the season, with Antonelli securing two of those victories and leading the drivers’ championship. However, the Italian driver acknowledged that Ferrari already possesses a strong baseline package, meaning gains on the engine side could quickly translate into improved competitiveness.

“I know there will be major changes. For example, the ADUO granted to Ferrari will allow them to develop the engine. They will definitely get much closer because their car is already strong,” Antonelli told Sky Sport Italy.
He emphasised that in the current regulatory environment, even incremental gains can have a substantial impact on overall performance, especially when combined with an already competitive chassis.
“If they manage to improve the engine as well, they will close the gap even more,” he added.
Despite recognising Ferrari’s potential, Antonelli stressed that his primary focus remains on executing consistently with Mercedes, rather than reacting to external developments.
“But I’m not too worried. Once I get on track, I focus on doing what I’ve done in previous race weekends: trying to be as fast as possible and focusing on myself and what I have to do,” he explained.
Antonelli also indicated that Mercedes is continuing its own development trajectory, with further updates expected to be introduced as the season progresses. Maintaining performance evolution will be critical in preserving its advantage over rival teams.
“I’m also sure that we will bring some important updates. The car is already strong and there’s a great dynamic within the team. So I’m not too worried, but I’m aware that the other teams will catch up sooner or later,” he concluded.
With regulatory tools such as ADUO influencing development pathways, the competitive landscape of the 2026 season is expected to tighten. Ferrari’s ability to capitalise on these opportunities could reshape the title fight, while Mercedes must sustain its momentum to remain at the front.
As the season moves forward, attention will focus on how quickly Ferrari can convert development allowances into on-track performance, and how effectively Mercedes responds to an evolving competitive challenge.
