Motorsport, Sportrik Media - Jos Verstappen has provided an update after a significant crash during the Rallye de Wallonie 2026, confirming that both he and co-driver Jasper Vermeulen escaped without injury.
The incident occurred on the opening special stage when their Škoda rolled following a loss of control through a right-hand corner. Dusty conditions and loose gravel on the surface were identified as key contributing factors, reducing grip at high speed.
"It was a right-hand bend I had to take in fourth gear. It was dusty, and there was gravel on the surface," Verstappen explained.

"I think I entered the corner a bit too fast, and at the exit, the car broke away. We then hit a post, which spun the car around before we landed on the roof."
Despite the severity of the accident, evident from the extensive damage to the car, both occupants were able to exit the vehicle unaided. The crew was forced to retire from the rally immediately due to the level of damage sustained.
The 52-year-old, who competed in 107 Formula 1 grands prix between 1994 and 2003 for teams including Benetton, Arrows, and Minardi, has remained active in rally competition for several years following his single-seater career.
Verstappen has since become a regular participant in national and international rally events, often partnering with experienced navigators such as Vermeulen, reflecting a sustained involvement in motorsport beyond Formula 1.
"The most important thing is that Jasper and I came out of the car safely. It was a big impact, but these cars are extremely safe, and that has been proven again. I'm glad we came out of it well," he said.
The incident once again underlines the high safety standards in modern rallying, while also highlighting the inherent risks of competitive stage racing. Verstappen is expected to return to competition following technical assessments and preparation for upcoming events.
