Joan Mir Defends Crash Record: I Know How to Ride Without Crashing

Joan Mir has broken his silence over the spate of crashes he has suffered since joining Honda in 2023. The Spanish rider insists he knows how to avoid falling, but the situation and his determination to extract maximum performance often lead him to take big risks.

Mir recorded 22 crashes last season and 16 so far in 2024, making him one of the most frequent crashers on the MotoGP grid. However, he attributes the high count to the necessity of pushing the difficult RC213V to its limits.

Context of Mir's Crashes at Honda

Since leaving Suzuki and joining the Japanese factory squad, Mir has suffered 79 crashes in 69 grands prix. This is nearly double the total number he had with Suzuki over three full seasons (24). His current teammate, Luca Marini, by contrast, rarely crashes, highlighting a stark difference in riding style.

Mir admitted that many crashes stem from trying to find more from the bike than it can deliver. "I am an experienced rider, but now I am also a rider who has to take advantage of every opportunity for a good result, because I don't know when the next one will come," he said at Aragon.

He also noted that starting from the back of the grid often forces him to take extra risks on the opening laps, leading to crashes. "If you start from the first or second row, you don't crash. Racing at the front is very different from racing at the back," Mir explained.

Despite everything, Mir insists he has not lost motivation. "There was a moment when I wasn't sure whether it was worth continuing. Now, if I have the opportunity, I try because I'm hungry for more," he said, adding that he needs to control that impulse given the bike's limitations.
