Last weekend’s IndyCar event on the streets of Markham, Ontario, got off to a rocky start. Fans who turned up for the first day were left with no on-track action whatsoever, as Friday’s sessions were postponed due to track construction delays.
Green Savoree Racing Promotions, the experienced promoter behind the St. Petersburg Grand Prix and IndyCar’s previous Toronto round, remained mostly silent throughout the weekend. It wasn’t until Wednesday that event president Jeff Atkinson issued a belated apology.
“We know we disappointed a lot of the people that were here on our Ontario Honda Dealers Free Fam Friday, and for that we’re sorry,” Atkinson said. “We’re sorry that we weren’t ready to have race cars on the track on Friday.”

He admitted the shortfall candidly: “We missed the mark on our Friday offering. We know our fans enjoyed our vendors and our exhibitor area, but there’s a lot of stuff we continue to improve on, and we will moving forward.”
Atkinson also promised to engage with fans and festival attendees for feedback. “We’ll be talking to our fans and our festival goers, getting their feedback and continuing to build this event in Markham because we know this venue is much easier to get to for many of our attendees,” he said.
Delays are not uncommon for inaugural street courses, where building a new track under tight timelines brings unique challenges. But given Green Savoree’s track record, the stumble still surprises.
Nevertheless, Atkinson stressed the commitment to do better. “We’ll continue to improve, and we will moving forward,” he concluded.
