Romain Grosjean came agonizingly close to ending his long win drought in open-wheel racing. Leading Sunday's inaugural IndyCar race at Markham with 20 laps to go in his Dale Coyne Racing entry, the Frenchman was hunted down by Marcus Ericsson in the closing laps.

When the #28 Andretti Honda blasted past on fresher tires with just four laps remaining, Grosjean knew he had no chance of matching that pace. Crossing the line in second, he admitted he had let himself believe this was his day to finally win after five seasons and five previous runner-up finishes in IndyCar.

“I cried a little,” said Romain Grosjean. “I’m not going to lie. But control what you can control. I think that comes from Andre Agassi, the book read. Did everything I could. I don’t know how the strategy worked for the #28. I guess the short pit lane helped them, then the fact a lot of people had to save fuel and run out of space. Obviously I haven’t watched the race. Very happy with my team and my performance.”

The moment brought back memories of his last race win, back in GP2 in 2011. After a decade in Formula 1 without a victory, he joked he might need to try karting or cycling to reset that record. “Again, I did everything I could. I went to Formula 1 for 10 years. Formula 1, if you don’t have the car, you don’t win a race. Yes, it’s a long time to have not won a race. I don’t think I forgot how to win a race. I just think I didn’t get the chance to do that, sog We’ll try. We’ll keep racing. Maybe I should do a go-kart race, I have more chances. Or a cycling race.”
