Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell claimed victory in the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix 2026 at Albert Park, Melbourne, after a strategic call from Ferrari opened the door for Mercedes to secure a dominant one-two finish in the season opener.
The race initially saw Charles Leclerc take the lead after an excellent launch from fourth on the grid. However, Ferrari’s decision not to pit either Leclerc or team-mate Lewis Hamilton during two Virtual Safety Car periods ultimately shifted the strategic balance in favour of Mercedes.
Russell managed the race from the front after the pit cycle, while team-mate Kimi Antonelli followed home in second to complete the one-two result for the Brackley-based team.

Leclerc finished third ahead of Hamilton in fourth, while McLaren driver Lando Norris completed the top five at Albert Park.
The race weekend also featured multiple incidents even before the start. Local driver Oscar Piastri failed to start the race after crashing on the reconnaissance lap to the grid, while Nico Hulkenberg was unable to begin the race due to a technical problem with his Audi.
Three additional drivers retired during the race, including Isack Hadjar of Red Bull Racing following a technical failure. Meanwhile, reigning world champion Max Verstappen recovered from 20th on the grid to finish sixth.
The result places Russell at the top of the early 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, while Mercedes leaves Melbourne with a strong points haul in the constructors’ standings ahead of the next round of the season.
