Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell revealed a key suspicion inside Mercedes after securing victory at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, Melbourne. The result also placed Russell at the top of the Formula 1 drivers’ championship standings for the first time in his career.
The race began with an intense duel between Russell and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. Despite starting from pole position, Russell lost the lead at the start after a sluggish launch, allowing Leclerc to take control of the race during the opening phase.
Their battle quickly evolved into what Russell described as a “yo-yo” fight for the lead. Both drivers exchanged positions multiple times in the opening stint, with Russell and Leclerc swapping places seven times as slipstream and straight-line speed played a crucial role at Albert Park.

The strategic turning point arrived when Russell pitted under a Virtual Safety Car on lap 11. Ferrari elected not to pit either Leclerc or teammate Lewis Hamilton during two VSC periods, meaning their primary pit stop occurred under green-flag conditions, which ultimately reduced their strategic advantage.
Russell then managed tyre graining concerns while completing 46 laps on a single set of hard tyres to secure his sixth Formula 1 grand prix victory. The result gave Mercedes a strong start to the 2026 season and placed Russell in control of the championship heading into the next round.
“It is incredible, it was a hell of a fight at the beginning, but we knew it was going to be challenging,” Russell said.
“I got on the grid and saw my battery had nothing in the tank, and made a bad start and then had some really tight battles with Charles.”
“We had this suspicion that it was going to be a bit of a yo-yo effect. As soon as one of us got in front, it was almost impossible to hold the lead.”
“With the straight mode we lose a lot at the front end of the car, so we had a lot of understeer through the corners. It was sketchy at times, but we managed to bring it home.”
The victory in Melbourne marks Russell’s sixth career grand prix win and establishes Mercedes as an early benchmark in the 2026 Formula 1 season as the championship moves toward the next round.
