A highly promising race weekend abruptly turned into a nightmare when Francesco Bagnaia suffered a severe accident on the opening lap of the sprint race. Piloting his Ducati Desmosedici at the Lusail International Circuit, the two-time world champion had displayed exceptional pace throughout practice and qualifying, finally rediscovering the competitive feeling he had been chasing for so long.
Disaster struck while he was running comfortably in fifth position, as an aggressive maneuver from Fermin Aldeguer wiped out the Italian rider in a heavy collision. The violent impact left Bagnaia with two fractures in his right foot and multiple contusions across his body, prompting an immediate flight back to Italy on Saturday night for emergency surgery.
Despite the devastating physical toll and the premature end to his weekend, Bagnaia refused to point fingers or direct harsh words toward the rookie crash instigator. Aldeguer subsequently issued a sincere apology to both Bagnaia and the factory Ducati squad for his costly misjudgment on track.

“It feels strange to say this, but Qatar was actually one of the best weekends of the season for me. Unfortunately, things sometimes do not go the way you want no matter how hard you try to turn things around,” Bagnaia shared via social media. “I really want to take the positives from this weekend because we have struggled with frustration for far too long. Thank you all so much for your messages, I am doing okay.”
Beyond missing the final chapter of his journey with Ducati on track, the timing of this injury casts a dark shadow over his immediate future. Whether the Italian star can return for the season-ending rounds in Portugal and Valencia remains highly uncertain, while his highly anticipated first test aboard the 850cc Aprilia machine scheduled for December 1st is now in serious jeopardy.
